I recieved more info on the Blue Coyote sponsership issue.
The sponsorship was lost, not stolen!
Lets keep it simple: The Padres frequent the Blue Coyote regularly, and have for 5 years long before they sponsored any team. On one outing to the Coyote this winter the servers and management shared that the team they sponsor never came in and that they would like to sponsor the Padres as they always come in (win or lose - and we all know it was mostly for the losing). So the Padres were approached by the Coyote. We went forward and accepted their sponsorship (with old and existing management - no convincing or stealing necessary. Afterwards, we contacted the old Coyote manager to make sure he knew...he did not. We were surprised by the Coyote for not contacting them in advance. The Padre Manager told the other team manager that they would step aside. The Padre Manager went to the Coyote in person to give back the sponsorship. The Coyote said they were not interested in sponsoring last year's team even if we returned their money. We offered to help the old team find a sponsor, but it did not make sense to have no team sponsored by the Coyote. Oh, and by the way, the "old" owners and management are the ones who made all the decisions. As far as I know, the new owners don't event take posession until March. The old owner signed the check and the old (and existing manager) spoke on behalf of last year's experience and their decision. The sponsorship was lost, not stolen!
